It starts with being grateful for the people who have, do or will impact your life.
Believe it or not, we are now at the midway point of 2015 and heading into a long July 4th weekend. Whether it’s miles away from your daily routine or right where you are today, as human beings there’s no time like the present to step back and just “be”. Yes, be in the present. Use this as an opportunity to relax, recharge, and reconnect. When I consider the areas in which we can be grateful, I focus on 4.
What a great time to offer thanks to the many that have made the freedom we enjoy today possible. That begins with the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence. As a special tribute, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is tapped 13 times every 4th of July in honor of the original 13 colonies. Then, what about our military?
I would like to share a poem by Bob Beskar titled, ” A Birthday Tribute To Our Nation”
Every time I see ” Old Glory”, I think of many things…
But most of all our freedom, that so many died to bring!
Though our Nation still is young, and suffers growing pains,
the visions of our forefathers, still solidly remains.
Their dreams are now reality, and their hopes the way we live,
and the blood they shed for us, was the price they vowed to give.
We’ve weathered many storms, and made some huge mistakes,
But we strive to make life better, and will do what it may take!
Though our backgrounds often vary, our dreams are much the same,
and we’ll fight until the death, for our freedom to remain.
The men who formed this Nation, knew well what they laid out,
and sacrificed so much, to bring this all about.
And now each year we celebrate, what those before us gave…
but even now there is a force that wants us in our grave.
We’re criticized for many things, the world does without,
but when there is a cry for help, we’re first to help them out.
We do it from our hearts, and for our fellow man,
for that’s what freedom teaches us, and lives throughout this land.
So as we celebrate our Nation’s birth, across our land and sea…
Let’s remember all our heroes, who died to make us free!
What a great weekend to be truly present with the ones who matter most to you. What will you do with your family this weekend? Will you attend a small town parade? Will you attend a family gathering featuring barbeque, swimming, horseshoes or the old family stories? Will you go to your children’s baseball or softball tournament? Will you head to the beach or to the mountains for some camping?
Old friends, new friends, friends of friends. What will you do together? Will you go play golf, tennis or volleyball? Will you gather together in the evening to watch a Fireworks display in your community or just tune into the ” Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular”?
Will you go for a long run or walk, go water skiing or tubing on your favorite lake or river, go hiking or kayaking?
Take a moment to think about what you are grateful for then have a great 4th as you acknowledge the past, enjoy the present and create wonderful memories for the future.
