Don’t Fight The Fed Chart

Posted on 05.14.15 |

Charts to Follow
by Steve Blumenthal, CEO, CMG Capital Management Group

CMG Capital Management Group logoOne of the charts I like to follow is Don’t Fight the Tape or the Fed.  The chart’s bottom clip plots the Simplified Tape and Monetary Indicators. These indicators are a combination of NDR’s Big Mo Multi-Cap Tape Composite and the 10-Year Treasury Yield percentage.  As evidenced by the S&P 500 gain per annum based on composite indicator levels, this indicator supports the notion that we should not fight the Tape or the Fed. I will continue to post this chart from time to time in Trade Signals.  Note the recent move to a -1 score.  The orange arrows indicate gain per annum in two different time periods when -1.  We do not trade a strategy following this process.  I like to keep an eye on this chart yet my personal favorite trend indicator remains Big Mo.

Eight is enough if you play as one! What’s the story behind this message?

Last week, I attended the Envestnet conference in Chicago. On Friday, the keynote speaker was Mike Krzyzewski, head basketball coach of the 2015 National Champion Duke Blue Devils and Team USA. To say I had high expectations for his speech is an understatement. He exceeded my expectations by delivering an energized, story filled presentation.

Today, I would like to share some of the main takeaways from his talk that I know will prove useful to you as you pursue your goals for your business, team, and family.

Coach K, as he is known by everyone, has coached at Duke since 1980. He has led them to an amazing 5 National Championships and 12 Final Fours. Averaging over 25 wins a year, he has led his teams to over 1,000 wins. In addition, as head coach, he lead Team USA to 2 gold medals and was an assistant on 2 other gold medal winning teams.

Trade Signals: Bond Model Signals Sell

Posted on 05.07.15 |

By Stephen Blumenthal, CEO, CMG Capital Management Group

CMG Capital Management Group Investor Sentiment MeterThe Zweig Bond model moved to a “SELL” signal this week signaling a move to shorten higher quality bond maturity duration.  Our CMG Managed HY Bond Program is neutral and we remain long HY bond exposure.  Momentum has declined and is essentially flat.

Risk remains high due to valuations, seasonality and the duration of the current cyclical bull market move, yet evidence continues to support a cautiously bullish position, in my view.

When Achievers Face Failure, Here’s 4 Things They Do

Posted on 05.05.15 |

Theodore Roosevelt once commented,” Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much. Because they live in that gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”

Let’s face it, we all make mistakes and fail from time to time. The question is, “Is it possible to view failure from a glass half full (positive) perspective?” I would answer with a resounding “Yes” if you chose to look at a failure as a step toward success. Many times it is by our trials that we progress.

Behind most success stories there lie many incidents of failure. Most people don’t see all the failures. They only see one side of the process. Many believe success is just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Those who consistently succeed know better. It’s through these failures and their willingness to move forward that their success is born. Winston Churchill used to say, ” The ability to be successful is the ability to go from failure to failure without giving up.”

Rodney Dangerfield Expansion

Posted on 05.04.15 |

By Stephen Blumenthal, CEO, CMG Capital Management Group.

Rodney DangerfieldIn the current On My Radar I share my top-line notes from the 12th Annual Strategic Investment Conference, presented by John Mauldin and Altegris last week. Maybe one of the speakers, David Rosenberg is right. His presentation was titled “The Rodney Dangerfield Expansion – the economy just can’t get any respect.”  There were various views, but what is clear is that traditional return potential is low.

For a quant geek like me, these few days are like sipping research data from a fire hose.  Hope you find my notes from day one helpful in your work with your clients.

For the full story see On My Radar: “The Rodney Dangerfield Expansion.”

This presentation does not discuss, directly or indirectly, the amount of the profits or losses, realized or unrealized, by any CMG client from any specific funds or securities. Please note: In the event that CMG references performance results for an actual CMG portfolio, the results are reported net of advisory fees and inclusive of dividends. The performance referenced is that as determined and/or provided directly by the referenced funds and/or publishers, have not been independently verified, and do not reflect the performance of any specific CMG client. CMG clients may have experienced materially different performance based upon various factors during the corresponding time periods.
Hypothetical Presentations: To the extent that any portion of the content reflects hypothetical results that were achieved by means of the retroactive application of a back-tested model, such results have inherent limitations, including: (1) the model results do not reflect the results of actual trading using client assets, but were achieved by means of the retroactive application of the referenced models, certain aspects of which may have been designed with the benefit of hindsight; (2) back-tested performance may not reflect the impact that any material market or economic factors might have had on the adviser’s use of the model if the model had been used during the period to actually mange client assets; and, (3) CMG’s clients may have experienced investment results during the corresponding time periods that were materially different from those portrayed in the model. Please Also Note: Past performance may not be indicative of future results. Therefore, no current or prospective client should assume that future performance will be profitable, or equal to any corresponding historical index. (i.e. S&P 500 Total Return or Dow Jones Wilshire U.S. 5000 Total Market Index) is also disclosed. For example, the S&P 500 Composite Total Return Index (the “S&P”) is a market capitalization-weighted index of 500 widely held stocks often used as a proxy for the stock market. Standard & Poor’s chooses the member companies for the S&P based on market size, liquidity, and industry group representation. Included are the common stocks of industrial, financial, utility, and transportation companies. The historical performance results of the S&P (and those of or all indices) and the model results do not reflect the deduction of transaction and custodial charges, nor the deduction of an investment management fee, the incurrence of which would have the effect of decreasing indicated historical performance results. For example, the deduction combined annual advisory and transaction fees of 1.00% over a 10 year period would decrease a 10% gross return to an 8.9% net return. The S&P is not an index into which an investor can directly invest. The historical S&P performance results (and those of all other indices) are provided exclusively for comparison purposes only, so as to provide general comparative information to assist an individual in determining whether the performance of a specific portfolio or model meets, or continues to meet, his/her investment objective(s). A corresponding description of the other comparative indices, are available from CMG upon request. It should not be assumed that any CMG holdings will correspond directly to any such comparative index. The model and indices performance results do not reflect the impact of taxes. CMG portfolios may be more or less volatile than the reflective indices and/or models.
In the event that there has been a change in an individual's investment objective or financial situation, he/she is encouraged to consult with his/her investment professionals.
